Police say they were called to the scene on State Highway 27 around 7.54 p.m.
The road will be closed and traffic will be diverted onto Torehape Road and Kaihere Road.
The unit has been alerted to serious accidents.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, the official Easter holiday period for 2021 began at 4 p.m. today and ends at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The Waikato accident is the first to be reported as part of the vacation highway toll.
Police say they will continue to be visible on the roads this long weekend, “deterring drivers from speeding, and we will have checkpoints operating anytime, anywhere for alcohol and breath testing.”
“We want to make sure everyone can enjoy their Easter vacation plans and return home safely,” says Inspector Pete Jones, acting director of the National Center for Highway Surveillance.
“To make sure that happens, road safety starts before you get behind the wheel: have you rested well, have you eaten and are you hydrated?
“Once you are in the car, do not accelerate, drive according to conditions, wear your seat belt and be patient. There will be a lot of traffic on the road, so be courteous and keep a safe following distance. “
Police said they will also target drivers who use their mobile phone.
