One person died and one of the main roads north of Canterbury was closed after a morning accident.

Emergency services were called to Omihi Rd (State Highway 1) about four miles south of the Greta Valley settlement, just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokeswoman Lyn Crosson said early reports suggested a car had hit a tree, trapping a person and blocking the road.

Crews from Amberley, Waipara and Scargill were dispatched to the scene and the person is believed to have sustained serious injuries, he said.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed that the person had died in the accident.

Things understand that the man is a local from the Omihi area.

San Juan was also sent to the place.

A spokesperson for the Christchurch Transportation Operations Centers said the accident had closed the road to traffic between Scargill Valley Rd and SH7.

The detours are in place. Northbound traffic should turn left on SH7, continue to Waikari Valley Rd, then on Scargill Valley Rd return to SH1 and reverse for southbound traffic.

Motorists should follow instructions from emergency services and wait for delays until they clear, he said.
