One person died after a two-car accident on State Highway 2 in Upper Hutt.
The accident took place on River Rd, part of State Highway 2, between Gibbons St and Whakatiki St, about 400 meters from the Gibbons St. turnoff.
The road would likely be closed for several hours while the scene was examined, and the police advised people to avoid any unnecessary travel on that route.
Two other people are in serious condition, transported by ambulance to Wellington Hospital.

A police spokesman said traffic would be directed through Gibbons and Whakatiki streets, but that drivers should avoid the area.
Police were alerted to the accident at 10:59 am on Saturday. The serious accidents unit was also present.
