About a dozen police officers and fire engines were at the scene of a fire in Minerva Tce, in Cockle Bay, Tuesday night.

A Cook St neighbor said he heard two explosions and believed a house at the end of the driveway caught fire.

“I heard a bang bang,” he said. Stuff.

“When I came out front, everyone was on the street.”

The area near Minerva Tce and Cook St was cordoned off, and a Hazmat commando unit was on site.

Craig Dally, a spokesman for Fire and Emergency NZ, previously said the two-story home was “well lit” when the crews first arrived, but was completely extinguished at 8 p.m.

Emergency services were first called to the fire at 6:49 p.m. Tuesday. From Howick you could see a great cloud of black smoke.

Burn marks could be seen on a white chimney on the roof of the house.

They were taken to Middlemore Hospital, police said.
