One person was killed in a frontal collision between a truck and a car in a section of controlled highway works on State Highway 6 on the West Coast.
The accident occurred around 1:10 p.m. Wednesday, just north of Hokitika on the Kumara Junction Highway, between Seaview Hill Rd and Keogans Rd, a police spokesman said.
Sergeant Major Brent Cook said the driver of one of the vehicles died at the scene after being trapped in the wreckage.
Another person was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital in serious condition, and two with moderate injuries were taken to Gray Hospital by ambulance.

Cook said the accident occurred at roadworks near the glowworm dell north of Hokitika.
“They were stop / go controlled roadworks and the police are investigating,” he said.
A New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesperson said firefighters were also on the scene.
The Major Accident Police Unit is assisting.
SH6 is closed while emergency services are working on site and there are diversions.
