One dead after three-vehicle crash in North Canterbury

One person died after a serious accident involving three vehicles in North Canterbury.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 7 (Weka Pass Rd) in Hurunui at 12:10 p.m. Friday.

A spokesman for St John initially said one person was slightly injured and treated at the scene, and that a rescue helicopter was dispatched, but not necessary.

But the police later confirmed that one person had died. An investigation into the circumstances of the accident is now underway.

The road was closed shortly after the incident and reopened shortly after 6.30 p.m.

Meanwhile, a person was taken to hospital with moderate injuries after a car crashed into a power pole on Grahams Rd at Rubens Pl in Burnside, Christchurch, shortly after 2.30pm on Friday.

Road closures were expected until 9 p.m. to allow contractors to replace the badly damaged power pole.
