An NZ Post delivery driver was injured when he tried to stop the alleged theft of his van while making deliveries in Hastings on Monday morning.

Police received a report of a van theft from Russell St, Hastings, around 9 a.m.

An NZ Post spokesperson said a Courier Post van had been attacked by thieves.

“A contract delivery driver was injured in the incident and is currently receiving treatment,” the NZ Post spokesman said.

“NZ Post will support the driver and his family as they recover.”

A spokeswoman for St John Ambulance said an ambulance and rapid response vehicle were dispatched to the scene, and a patient in moderate condition was transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Hawke’s Bay District Board of Health confirmed that the man, in his 40s, is now stable.

A spokesperson for Cafe at Westermans, on Russell St, Hastings, said that several customers sitting inside witnessed the incident.

“It was terrifying because of the sounds to the driver,” they said.

The van was found around 9:30 am dumped on Riverslea Rd, Hastings.

Police detained two people and charged a 21-year-old man with illegally taking over a motor vehicle. The other person has not been charged.

The 21-year-old was due to appear in Hastings District Court on Monday.

An NZ Post spokesperson added: “We are investigating the contents of the van to find out what, if anything, was taken, and then we will notify customers if necessary.”
