New Zealand’s Favorite Pizza Topping Revealed

Regardless of how you slice it, there’s nothing like a piping hot pizza, and despite endless exciting flavor combinations at our fingertips, it turns out that Kiwis prefer to keep it simple.

No, we’re not talking Hawaiian, with its ham, cheese, and pineapple dressing, and Dad’s favorite meat lovers aren’t dominating either.

And we can absolutely promise you that Bill English’s controversial spaghetti pizza hasn’t topped the charts either.

According to Domino’s, it is the humble pepperoni that has taken the top spot as the most popular pizza flavor in New Zealand.

The traditional combination of tomato sauce, cheese and salty pepperoni may be one of the most classic flavor combinations of all, but it is still the preferred option for many of us.

In fact, Domino’s stores alone deliver more than 10,000 pepperoni pizzas to Kiwis every day.

That means we consume a staggering 275 metric tons of pepperoni each year, or 5,288 kg per week.

Domino’s Australia and New Zealand CEO Nick Knight, a self-confessed pepperoni pizza fan, says he’s not surprised that the classic flavor has remained a favorite.

“Domino’s has introduced a variety of tasty pizzas to the menu over the years, but
nothing has ever come close to outshining this universally adored classic, “he says.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has curtailed many joys that we once took for granted, but we consider ourselves lucky to be able to enjoy our favorite slice.

“Even during various alert level restrictions, we have seen the power of a pepperoni pizza to bring people together, whether it is shared among members of the household or enjoyed virtually on a video call with friends.”

And the flavor has proven popular with vegans too, yeah, you heard right. Vegan and vegetarian pizza lovers had a piece of the action last year when Domino’s introduced a plant-based pepperoni pizza to its menu.

Are you still hungry?
