New Zealanders have set a new record for the number of transactions per second today.
As of 2:00 p.m., $ 166 million had been invested in the boxes.
The busiest time of the day is likely past, peaking at 204 transactions per second at 12.30pm, a new high.
The previous record was 188 per second and the daily average was 60.
Paymark CEO Maxine Elliott said they had to work hard to ensure the retail network was fully operational around the clock.
Paymark had seen close to 3 million transactions processed since midnight.
Company spokesman Paul Brislen said Control the pandemic had not been bad news for retailers, and most would be quietly satisfied with spending this year.
“We’ve seen a really impressive rebound, not evenly distributed, of course, not across the board, but in many parts of the retail economy spending has been as good as last year, if not better.”
He said that food and beverage, home and recreation, and clothing and footwear retailers had a “huge” drop during the shutdown, but had since been trading at similar figures to last year.
However, tourism retailers, unsurprisingly, were not doing well, he said.
Brislen said the overall Christmas retail spending figure would be much higher than what Paymark reported as it did not include online sales and other Eftpos machine vendors in its statistics.
