Weightlifter Sean Winters has been suspended for two years by the New Zealand Sports Court after failing a doping test.

A statement from Drug Free Sport NZ said that Winters tested positive for the stimulant octodrine and its metabolite heptaminol. Its suspension is retroactive to July 19, 2020.

Winters was tested while competing in this year’s Auckland Powerlifting Championships in July. He said he was using a supplement that was contaminated with octodrine, although he was unable to provide evidence.

Octodrine and its metabolite heptaminol are stimulants that act on the central nervous system. Octodrine is a prescription drug in New Zealand and is banned from competition.

“We know that supplements present a greater risk for athletes, because it is not always clear what they contain. We recommend that all athletes consult our Supplement Decision Making Guide so that they can better understand the risks of supplements and make an informed decision, ”said Drug Free Sport NZ CEO Nick Paterson.

“We know that supplements are commonly used in sports, but it remains the athlete’s responsibility to be aware of what they are taking and whether it contains a prohibited substance.”
