“Over the years I’ve been fatter, thinner, various things… I know what it is. If I eat too many calories and do not exercise to get rid of them, therefore, I will gain weight. That’s how it works.
“I know there are some lucky people who don’t, but actually most of us do.”
Collins said we all make personal decisions about food, including herself.
“I find it very difficult to resist anything that contains potatoes, so the best thing I can do is not buy potatoes.”
People with pre-existing medical conditions were an exception, he added.
“There are some people, and I admit it, who have certain medical conditions, but in reality most of us, myself included, just need to take a little more control of ourselves and our personal decisions.”
“I have fatter parts than others, but you know what, Ryan? I don’t blame a system, I blame myself.”
Labor leader Jacinda Ardern disagreed with Collins’ position on obesity on Wednesday, saying we need community solutions instead.
But Collins says Ardern doesn’t understand.
“Those of us who have been, depending on what we do and what we eat, I tell you one thing: we understand what it is, and we are not asking anyone else to feel sorry for us or to give us a community solution.
“I would tell Jacinda Ardern, unless she’s overweight, she probably doesn’t know anything about it.”
