New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern thanked Auckland residents who emerged from lockdown after Sunday night for their commitment to suppressing the latest coronavirus outbreak.
Two new cases of Covid-19 were reported on Sunday, both in the community and linked to the latest group from Auckland. Ardern thanked the residents of New Zealand’s largest city for adhering to the strict closure requirements.
“Our system is only as good as our people,” he said. “And our people are amazing.”
But Ardern urged Auckland residents to “keep going.” Although the closure is lifted on Monday, the masks will be a must on public transportation and will be strongly recommended elsewhere.
“Basically, when you leave your house, we ask you to wear a mask.”
Ardern said it was “highly unlikely” that Covid was outside Auckland and “we want to keep it that way.”
He warned that if more outbreaks occurred, New Zealand could be forced to raise alert levels again.
The curb program has worked well, Ardern said in a televised briefing: “It is designed to keep us on track with our elimination strategy.”

By Sunday there were 136 active cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand, with 10 people in the hospital, two of them in intensive care.
New Zealand has recorded 1,378 cases of Covid-19 since the pandemic began. The death toll is 22.
