The Minister of Education has presented school construction projects across the South Island, including a new $ 20 million elementary school for 400 students in Rolleston.

Chris Hipkins announced the projects during a visit to Waimea College in Nelson today.

It is part of the 164 million dollar package announced yesterday.

Of the $ 32 million detailed today, $ 20 million will be spent on the construction of a new elementary school in Rolleston East, south of Christchurch. The school will have capacity for 400 students.

“More and more families are choosing to move to Rolleston after the earthquakes. It is one of the fastest growing areas in the country.

“Five million will also be used to fund short-term classrooms in schools in the South Island facing heavy pressure from the rapid growth of the list,” said Hipkins.

The funding will go to a total of 28 classrooms at schools in Canterbury, Otago, Nelson and Tasman, with a total of 616 student spaces.

The other $ 7 million will provide permanent growth classrooms at Waimea College, St Martins School in Christchurch, Prebbleton School, and Grants Braes School in Dunedin.

“Families rightly hope that their children can learn in warm, dry and comfortable classrooms, and we are working hard to make that happen as an important factor in making New Zealand the best country in the world to raise a child,” Hipkins. said.

He added that the spending would also provide a line of work for the construction industry and other businesses.
