A BP gas station in Napier was badly damaged by fire tonight.

Emergency services responded to the fire at the Main North Rd gas station in Bay View around 9:30 p.m.

Witnesses who posted images of the fire on social media said they could hear multiple explosions.

It appears that the roof of the esplanade is in tatters.

Some nearby residents had to evacuate their homes, but police said shortly after 11 p.m. they could return.

“However, residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed at night.”

Police were still speaking with witnesses tonight and making inquiries to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
