British police say one person was killed and seven more injured after a series of stabbings in a busy nightlife area of ​​central England’s city of Birmingham.

West Midlands Police said officers were called in to report a stabbing in the city center shortly after midnight Sunday (local time). That was soon followed by reports of other stabbings in the area.

“A man has tragically died,” police said.

“Another man and woman have suffered serious injuries and five others have also been injured, although their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”

Police believe the incidents are related.

“We can now confirm that we have launched a murder investigation following the events in Birmingham city center,” police said.

Chief Superintendent Steve Graham, who is responsible for policing in Birmingham, called the stabbings “tragic, shocking and understandably terrifying.”

Previously, emergency services were on site to ensure that the injured received medical attention. Police said the response would continue “for some time” and urged people to stay away from the area.
