Janica Herlihy was caught with cannabis and utensils after police visited her home for an unrelated matter.
A woman selling cannabis to finance her son’s 21st birthday was arrested after an unrelated visit to her home in Taranaki saw police officers sniff out the drug.
Janica Herlihy was caught with 513 grams of marijuana, $ 1,520 in cash and smoking devices, it was heard in New Plymouth District Court.
On Thursday, the 39-year-old man appeared to be sentenced on admitted charges of possession of cannabis for the supply and possession of utensils.
When police arrived at Herlihy’s home in New Plymouth on June 30 in connection with a separate matter, officers at the door of her home could smell a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside, Judge Mina Wharepouri told the court.

This invoked a warrant to search the house and, once inside, the police located the cannabis, some of which was previously packaged in individual bags.
The search also turned up bongs, a small cannabis grow room in the master bedroom, and an inventory list.
Herlihy admitted that she was selling the drug in order to save money for her son’s 21st birthday.
In court, defense attorney Samantha Hunt said the cannabis found was of mixed quality, with some of it being leaf or “cabbage.”
About 100 grams of the drug was ready for sale to a limited number of people, but the rest was for Herlihy’s personal use for medicinal reasons, Hunt said.
Police prosecutor Graham Hosking also claimed that the cannabis was of mixed quality.
He sought the confiscation of the $ 1,520 found during the police search.

She was sentenced for the crimes in New Plymouth District Court on Thursday.
Judge Wharepouri accepted that some of the cannabis was intended for personal use and that Herlihy’s sales were modest.
For the crime, she was sentenced to five months of community detention, nine months of supervision and 75 hours of community service.
Judge Wharepouri also issued an order to confiscate the money and an order to destroy the utensils for drugs and cannabis.
