Dozens of Auckland beaches have been declared unsafe for swimming after heavy rains over the weekend.
Auckland City Council’s Safeswim website is a sea of red warnings, indicating a high health risk on more than 50 beaches from Snells Beach in the north to Sandspit in the south.
The popular swimming beaches at Kawakawa Bay, Orewa, Herne Bay, Narrow Neck, Kohimarama and St Heliers are off limits.
With Auckland’s weather set to improve in the coming days, bathers are advised to check the Safeswim website before packing their clothes. The level of pollution and conditions such as tides and currents will determine how long it takes for the water quality to return to normal.
