More heavy rains are coming as Plimmerton clears from heavy flooding

Heavy rains are heading toward the Wellington region on Monday, as Plimmerton residents clean up flooding that filled houses with sediment and prompted 15 evacuations Sunday.

MetService has heavy rain clocks for Wellington and the Tararua ranges from 7pm Monday to 1am Tuesday. The southern gales are expected to hit 110 kilometers per hour.

Porirua, including Plimmerton, was forecast to receive 9.6mm of rain around 9pm Monday night.

Porirua Mayor Anita Baker said Plimmerton, at the north end of Porirua, received the combination of a queen tide and torrential rain causing the flooding that peaked around 10 a.m.

Homes around Moana Rd, Airlie Rd, and Cluny Rd suffered the worst when downed trees and debris blocked drains and water entered the homes.

Fifteen homes had to be evacuated, two of them were housed and 13 stayed with friends and family, he said.

Baker visited homes in the aftermath of the flood Sunday and saw a home where residents were removing silt from the home by “bucket loading.” Another resident spoke of the water bubbling on the ground.

The king’s high tide peaked at 10 a.m. Sunday, at the exact time the peak of the rain came, he said.

Contractors worked hard to clean the drains on Sunday, and she was careful that the drains could cope with the rain that was coming.

MetService recorded 33mm of rain in the hour to 10am Sunday at nearby Battle Hill.
