The mystery behind the monoliths that appeared first in Utah, then Romania and California before disappearing may have been solved.

For the past 24 hours, a group called The Most Famous Artist has been posting behind-the-scenes clues and photos of the building of the monoliths on their Instagram account.

A monolith was placed in a red rock desert at an undisclosed location in Utah's San Juan County. It was later removed. The gleaming monolith seemed to vanish as mysteriously as it appeared in the American desert.

A monolith was placed in a red rock desert at an undisclosed location in Utah’s San Juan County. It was later removed. The gleaming monolith seemed to vanish as mysteriously as it appeared in the American desert.

The group, which is based in Sante Fe in New Mexico in the United States, also offered to sell the monoliths for around $ 63,000 (US $ 45,000) to interested parties.

When the followers asked him directly if it was “you” who was responsible for the appearance and subsequent disappearance of the monoliths, the most famous artist replied “if by you he means us, yes”.

The group’s founder, Matty Mo, was interviewed by Mashable about the series of appearances that captured the world’s attention and generated much media speculation about the origin of the glittering objects.

“I can’t say much due to the legality of the original installation,” Mo wrote.

“I can say that we are well known for stunts of this nature and at the moment we are offering authentic objects of art through monoliths as a service,” said Mo.

“I cannot release additional images at this time, but I can promise more on this in the coming days and weeks.

“What better way to end this p … year than to let the world briefly think that the aliens made contact only to be disappointed that he is the Most Famous Artist playing again,” he added.

The group posted concept photos of the monoliths, as well as photos of the monoliths being loaded and in a warehouse.

The first monolith appeared in the Utah desert in mid-November.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said the 10-foot-tall structure was discovered by the DPS Aero Bureau and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources on Nov. 18 in Red Rock Country while on a mission to perform a count of bighorn sheep in a part of the southeast. Utah.

Nine days later, the structure disappeared without any indication of who had removed it, or why.

Since then, other structures appeared in Romania, California, and in Pittsburgh.

The California monument was torn down by a religious group, who replaced it with a cross, drawing the ire of the locals.
