A Port Road Drags bystander is seriously injured and another suffered minor injuries after a car driver lost control and struck a barrier at the Lower Hutt long-running community event.
The moment was captured by a viewer and shows the vehicle revving its engine and turning its wheels before breaking through the barrier.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that the serious accident unit attended the event and the circumstances will be investigated.
One person was taken to Wellington Regional Hospital in serious condition Sunday afternoon. They were in stable condition Monday morning.

Wellington Free Ambulance had a crew on site and attended the accident shortly after 3pm Sunday. Two ambulances, firefighters and policemen also attended.
Onlooker Dan Moth saw the car hit the safety barriers. Families, including those with young children, attended the event. He had taken his daughter.

“Obviously it happened pretty fast. But, there was a child who was close … the people looking could see what was happening and they were moving back in anticipation of the car approaching, “he said.

“It wasn’t more than about 20 km / h per hour, but it is [the car] a big and heavy thing “.
The crash caused a “great shower of water and plastic fragments” from the water-filled barriers, he said.
It was the first year Moth had attended the event. The accident had not deterred him and he said he would go again.
Police confirmed that the event was canceled after the accident.
Event organizer Steve “Jock” Reid said he could not comment, but the incident had been referred to MotorSport New Zealand.

Port Road Drags is the longest running street drag event in Australasia, having started more than 50 years ago.
