The Jonah Project said the whales, believed to be pilot whales, were seen swimming in shallow, muddy water at high tide around 10 a.m.

Part of the pod avoided being stranded, however a rescue mission is underway for other whales that are still in shallow water.

Stuff understand that there are about 40 whales involved.

Passerby Tellic Evans said the whales were north of the Colville school.

He said some whales were “well beached” when the tide started to go out.

About 100 people were helping at the scene, including Fire and Emergency NZ.

“This is a relatively remote part of Coromandel and can be an all-day answer,” Project Jonah posted on social media.

Anyone who wants to help should consider bringing warm clothing or a wetsuit, food and drink, he added.
