A Michigan couple whose large family attracted attention by growing to include 14 children welcomed their first daughter nearly three decades after the birth of their first child. Maggie Schwandt was born on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at a hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Kateri Schwandt gave birth to Maggie Jayne on Thursday, who weighed 3.4kg and entered a world filled with 14 older siblings.

Jay Schwandt said that he and his wife, both 45, “are very pleased and beyond excited to add Maggie Jayne to our family.”

“This year has been memorable in many ways, for many reasons, but Maggie is the greatest gift we could ever imagine,” he told Detroit Free Press after the birth of her daughter at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids in the USA.

The Schwandts have been featured in local and national news for years as their family grew. The couple have a live broadcast show called “14 Men Outdoors” that may now need a name change.

Their oldest son, Tyler Schwandt, 28, said his parents thought they would never have a daughter after 14 children. He said there is probably nothing pink at the family home in the rural community of Lakeview, about 30 miles northeast of Grand Rapids.

“I don’t even know if my mother has pink clothes, or something,” said Tyler, who is engaged to be married and recently bought a home 20 minutes from his parents’ 80-acre farm.

The Schwandts began dating as freshmen, attending Gaylord High School and Gaylord St. Mary’s, respectively. They were married in 1993, before attending Ferris State University, and before graduation, the couple had three children.

They both earned advanced degrees, even as their family grew.

Kateri has a master’s degree in social work from Grand Valley State University, and Jay, who is a lawyer and a surveying business owner, has a law degree from Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley School of Law.
