Despite his mother’s protests, he took a knife from the bench and, while the dog was hiding under the computer desk, McVicar stabbed him once in the neck.
As his mother yelled at him, he threatened to do the same to you.
Then McVicar tossed the knife into the kitchen sink and went back to watching television.
The dog was described as being in great distress and bleeding profusely, requiring treatment.
McVicar admitted to the crime and told police he was not in a good mood.
In Dunedin District Court on Tuesday he was convicted by Judge Michael Crosbie on charges of mistreating animals and threatening to cause serious bodily injury.
McVicar’s attorney said his client loved his mother and the dog, and was under stress at the time of the incident.
“ He is quite sorry. ”
Judge Crosbie told the defendant that he needed to address his methamphetamine addiction, before incarcerating him for 16 months.
He was also disqualified from having an animal for five years.
