Australia’s most popular racehorse, Subzero, eventually succumbed to heart failure and was humanely euthanized.
It comes just two months after longtime friend and mentor Graham Salisbury died of cancer.
Subzero, the 1992 Melbourne Cup winner, achieved greater fame and adoration with Salisbury in his visits to schools, nursing homes, hospices, as well as casinos, hotels and a host of other promotional activities that earned them worldwide adoration.
‘Subbie’, as he was affectionately known, would be officially 32 years old on September 26.
She has long battled normally life-threatening illnesses and injuries, from chronic arthritis to colic, kidney problems and peritonitis, but she fought valiantly until her heart gave out Saturday and Bendigo Equine vet Sarah Jalim made the decision to that it was time to sacrifice it. .
“I’ve never had confidence in anything in my life, sadly this was the right time and this was what we had to do for Subbie,” Sarah said.
“I looked at him today and knew he had stuck together for so long, sure he had missed Graham but he had accumulated fluid in his chest, heart disease is not common in horses, he had had a heart murmur for some time but eventually the heart decompensates and cannot draw back the blood. “
“He has not suffered anything.”
She had been a longtime ally of Subbie in his ongoing health issues, but says the vet decision was the right one and the only one.
“He was a gentleman, a complete gentleman with an incredible heart,” he said.
“If you want to compare him to the champions, Black Caviar was undefeated, Winx won many races, Subbie, he did so much for so many people and that is how he should be remembered, a very special horse.”
It was Anita Salisbury who called Sarah.
“I was just not eating properly and was losing weight,” he said. “I just couldn’t go on like this.
“He was putting carrots in his food and that was all he was eating.
“He went to Graham, now they can create havoc together.
“There is no doubt that he had missed Graham, every night he came to the edge of his pasture looking for the house in search of him.”
The plan is for Subzero’s body to be cremated and there is a plan to create a memorial for him and Graham Salisbury, possibly in Flemington.
Graham’s son Anthony marveled at Subzero’s resilience since his father’s death
“It’s been a great effort for Subbie to get this far, as we all know,” he said.
“This is how it was always going to be, the old man wanted it to be Sarah’s decision and he didn’t want to be around to take it.”
