One lucky Melbourne Cup punter has over a million reasons to never forget the 2020 edition of the race after winning the biggest prize ever paid by the New Zealand TAB in the race.
The bet, made at the Bishopdale TAB store in Christchurch, returned $ 1.16 million for just a $ 120 outlay.
TAB CEO Dean McKenzie said the winning bet was the largest paid by TAB in recent memory.

Twilight Payment wins the Melbourne Cup from Tiger Moth and Prince Of Arran third on Tuesday. The fourth house was The Chosen One, owned by Southland.
“The retired man from Bishopdale in Christchurch made a combination of First4 bets totaling $ 120. One of those combinations for $ 30 returned $ 1,168,185,” McKenzie said.

“The man received $ 38,939.50 for every dollar he bet.
“We have reviewed our records and this is the largest collection we have obtained. Looking back to 2013, the next biggest Melbourne Cup win was $ 364,016, “said McKenzie.
Bishopdale TAB branch manager Kerralyn Hooper confirmed that the man has been a loyal customer at the branch for 25 years.
“I have been involved with the TAB for 25 years and have never seen anything like it. The client is well known to us and he is a very nice guy, so we are delighted with him, ”he said.
“It was just surreal to see someone make that kind of money. We were so excited for him. I think initially our excitement was greater than his because he was still in shock, ”Hooper said.
The New Zealanders set a new betting record at the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday with bets totaling $ 11.5 million on the Cup race alone.
That figure surpassed the previous career-high billing of $ 10.3 million set in 2018.
The TAB posted a total turnover of $ 26.6 million for the entire day on Tuesday, up 14 percent from last year and the highest ever turnover on a Melbourne Cup day.
