Melania Trump could receive up to $ 68 million in a divorce settlement if she officially severed ties with her husband, US President Donald Trump, according to a high-profile divorce attorney.
The couple met in 1998 when a young Melania Knauss met the then real estate mogul. They have been married for 15 years and have a son, Barron, who is 14 years old.
Their marriage has been in the limelight since Trump lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden.
The speculation comes when Melania was photographed this week holding the arm of a military man and not her husband when they arrived at a Veterans Day ceremony.
The military man held an umbrella to protect the First Lady from the rain.
It comes after several times during her time in the White House where Melania Trump was seen rejecting her husband’s hand.
“Melania is counting every minute until he leaves office and she can get a divorce,” said former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman.
“If Melania tried to take the maximum humiliation and left while he was in office, he would find a way to punish her.”
Melania could receive a settlement of up to $ 50 million (A $ 68 million), according to American divorce lawyer Jacqueline Newman, managing partner of Berkman Bottger Newman & Rodd, in an interview with Town and Country.
“I imagine the payment would be quite generous,” he said.
That figure depends on whether Melania would get custody of her son, but Newman believes the custody rights would be in Melania’s favor.
“There doesn’t seem to be much question about who is the primary caregiver,” the attorney said. “My guess is that she would get the primary custody rights and he would have access whenever he was in town.”
Donald Trump, who will continue in the president’s chair until Biden takes office on January 21, has been married twice before.
Both marriages ended in divorce, and the agreements were disputed with prenuptial agreements.
Trump married his first wife, Ivanka Trump, in 1977, and the couple divorced in 1992. She reportedly received $ 14 million, a Connecticut mansion, a New York apartment, and access to Mar-a- Lago once a year, after challenging the pre-nup in the divorce agreement.
Marla Maples was his second wife, married between 1993 and 1999 and reportedly received a payment of $ 2 million after also contesting the prenup.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MELANIA?
There is speculation about whether Melania and Barron will return to New York so that he can return to his old private school in Manhattan, or stay in Washington while finishing high school in Maryland, not far from the White House.
After January 21, Melania could return to the Trump Tower penthouse in New York City, the Mar-a-Lago Estate in Florida, or head to the Seven Springs Estate in Westchester and Trump National Golf Course in Bedminster.
Experts say it could be Florida because she voted in person in Palm Beach County, registered as the Trumps’ official residence.
