Swimmers and surfers are urged to avoid several beaches on the south coast of New South Wales, as a decomposing whale carcass triggers a shark feeding frenzy.

A drone operator spotted a massive shark Friday swimming close to shore and near a boat on the Peggys surf breakwater after a “significant number of sharks” were spotted between Sandon Point and Bulli Beach.

“It’s safe to say that I won’t be browsing Peggys for a few days,” Geo Mattis wrote on Instagram sharing photo videos of the mega shark.

Illawarra City Council closed the beaches of Bulli, Thirroul, Sandon Point and Woonona, and lifeguards urged people not to exercise on the sand.

“We ask everyone to stay out of the water between Sandon Point and Bulli Beach,” the Wollongong City Council said today.

“There have been a significant number of sharks sighted in the area after a dead whale was washed away at Waniora Point, Bulli.”

“Surf Life Saving Illawarra is # warning swimmers, surfers and divers not to enter the water at #Bulli and Sandon Point beaches due to a significant number of # large sharks in the area feeding on a dead whale carcass” , Surf Life Saving NSW said on Twitter.

Lifeguards also shared a video of the whale carcass crashing into rocks on the beach in the area, with shark fins visible in the nearby water.

Council lifeguards are working with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and New South Wales Police to get the body safely off the beach.
