Matakana festival organizers are ‘deeply saddened’ by the man’s death, cause remains unconfirmed

Organizers of an Auckland music festival say they are “deeply saddened” by the sudden death of a festival goer.

The man, in his 20s, suffered a “medical event” at the Hidden Valley Festival in Matakana on Sunday night, police said.

However, the man’s cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesman Lincoln Davies said his paramedics were called to the incident around 6.34pm, however the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was in progress when the crew arrived, but unfortunately they were unable to resuscitate him.”

The type of medical event the man suffered is unknown.

In a statement, the organizers of the Red Rum Touring festival said their sincere condolences were with the man’s whānau.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of one of our Hidden Valley assistants.

“As a live music festival that prides itself on providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all, we are devastated by this tragic event.”

The safety and well-being of festival goers, musicians, staff, security and support team was the number one priority, the statement continued.

The organizers would continue to work together with the police and local authorities to “support this delicate matter with the utmost respect.”

“Our thoughts, respect and aroha remain with the family of the deceased at this time.”

There were five paramedics and two ambulances at the scene between 3 pm and 12 am during the festival.

Tickets have been sold out every year since the festival’s launch in 2016.

The festival typically kicks off the summer festival season and boasts of being the first festival to be held after Christmas.

This year, artists in attendance at the festival included Alison Wonderland, Dimension, Sub Focus, The Upbeats with MC Tali, Montell2099, Sachi, and Lee Mvtthews.
