The Ramada Hotel on Federal St, Auckland, is used as a managed seclusion hotel.
A man who allegedly escaped from a run isolation facility in Auckland by lowering the covers from a fourth floor window has appeared in court.
The man, who was granted provisional name removal, appeared before Community Judge Dianne Hale in Auckland District Court on Thursday afternoon.
The man did not plead guilty to the charge of not staying at the Ramada Hotel for a required period under the Covid-19 Public Health Response Act and Order 2020 on September 28.
He was put in preventive detention.
The man returned from Australia on a deportation flight on September 16. It has tested negative for Covid-19 twice and the risk to the public is believed to be low.
The head of managed isolation and quarantine, Air Commodore Darryn Webb said that around 8:20 a.m. Monday, security personnel at the Ramada’s Federal St site located several tied sheets, hanging from a window in a fourth-floor room. .
Webb said security improvements would be made to the facility, including the installation of more security cameras, as well as additional lighting at the man’s likely exit point.
