A Papatoetoe resident says he heard police yelling at a gunman to put down his gun, moments before two shots were heard and he fell to the ground.
The gunman, who according to police had previously fired at a neighboring house, was seriously injured and is now in hospital fighting for his life.
Manukau District Commander, Counties Superintendent Jill Rogers, said police were called to an Avis Avenue property at 5.46 p.m. after a shot was fired through the window of a neighboring home, though no one he was hurt.
Police, including members of the Armed Criminal Squad and the Eagle helicopter, responded and cordons were placed.
Almost two and a half hours later, a man with a gun emerged from the house where the shot had been fired.
Rogers said he had a gun and that police shot him.
A local resident told the Herald he heard gunshots.
“I came out and the police (were) yelling to put the gun down and then two shots and they shot the guy down.”
A NewstalkZB listener said he heard three shots and saw an ambulance arrive and then leave the property.
Rogers said the man was taken to hospital in critical condition.
Large numbers of residents were trapped outside the cordon and were unable to access their homes throughout the armed incident. However, it is understood that some people are now being let in.
Rogers said a cordon will remain in place overnight and an examination of the scene will begin tomorrow.
A critical incident investigation into the shooting is underway and the IPCA will be notified.
