A man was left in the hospital in critical condition after sustaining severe head injuries when he was assaulted in a Christchurch suburb.

Emergency services were called to Newmark St in Bishopdale around midnight Tuesday.

The property, which is one of four community housing units at the address, was cordoned off Wednesday as police officers examined the scene for evidence.

A man living at the address, David Alexander Burbery, later appeared in Christchurch District Court on charges of growing cannabis, before being released on bail.

Residents living near the property said Stuff they had not heard anything during the night.

One said they had previously had problems with those who lived in the units.

The property where the incident occurred is understood to be owned by Comcare Trust, a registered community housing provider.

The property is also listed in a 2018/19 financial statement published by the trust.

Comcare’s manager of community support services, Vickie Cooper, declined to comment when contacted by Stuff.

Detective Inspector Mike Ford said police want to speak to anyone who saw what happened or who may have information about the incident.

“The police would also like to speak with the family and friends of the injured man.”
