Police are investigating the unprovoked attack on a woman in Masterton on May 1 (file photo).
After asking for a lighter, a man attacked and threw a woman to the ground.
In a statement, police said they were investigating the assault at Masterton that occurred on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m.
The woman was approached by a man who had been sitting in the stands of the softball park on Harley St. He then assaulted her.
The lights of a passing car startled the man and gave the victim a chance to escape.

The victim had minor injuries and did not need medical treatment.
Police described the man as 30 to 40 years old with olive skin. Medium to tall, he had a short beard and wore a black beanie with a rolled-up front.
He had a slim build and his chin-length dark brown hair, with light highlights or gray streaks, protruded from under the hat.
Police said the man was wearing a light black sports jacket or zip-up jacket in the front, a dirty light gray or white sweatshirt underneath, blue jeans, white sneakers and was carrying a reusable plastic bag.
Detective Sergeant Dean Cadwallader said, “This was an unprovoked attack, and we are asking for the public’s help in identifying this criminal so that this does not happen to anyone else.”
