A man ripped a closet full of wristwatches from the hands of a Spex staff member on Friday morning.

When a staff member asked a man to leave, a closet full of $ 20,000 worth of wristwatches was ripped from his arms.

The incident took place at Spex on Emmerson St in Napier, on Friday morning.

One of the staff members, Suzannah Toomey, along with her colleague Mary Nichols were at the store when the man entered after 10:30 a.m. asking to inspect the wristwatches.

The clocks were in a portable cabinet above the counter. A holder, filled with cords for sunglasses and reading glasses, was placed on top of the cabinet.

“The guy came in and asked to inspect our 130 Nixon, which has the bigger face and is really solid. I asked him if he wanted to try it on, but he asked for silver, since we only had one in gold, “said Toomey.

“I checked the computer and told him we only had one in metal. He just stood there and kept looking at the cables. “

Toomey said the man mumbled something.

“I think he said ‘how much do they (laces) cost’ and I said they range from $ 10 to $ 20.”

Toomey said the man asked Nichols to hold the cable holder. Then the couple became suspicious.

“She took it and then put it right back in the closet. Then he said ‘can you go? You’re making us uncomfortable. ‘ Then he said ‘well, I’m going to take this’ and took the cabinet. “

Store owner Terri Coats said Nichols grabbed her and tried to grab her, but the man was too strong and snatched her away before running out of the store.

Toomey said the man got into a dark blue Mazda Axela and drove off.

No one was injured in the incident and a police spokesman said they were investigating the theft.
