One man is in intensive care and another faces serious bodily injury charges after an incident at a Wairarapa party.

Sergeant Major Jennifer Hansen said police were called to a home on Cole St, Masterton at 9.50 p.m. Saturday after receiving reports of a serious assault.

He confirmed that a 33-year-old Rangitikei man was facing assault charges.

The victim, a 43-year-old man from Christchurch, was in serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Wellington Hospital. He had suffered a serious head injury, he said.

“There seemed to be some kind of celebration going on in the house at the time.”

A neighbor at the home confirmed that there was a party at the Cole St, Masterton home on Saturday night and screams were heard.

The 33-year-old Marton’s man appeared in Masterton District Court Monday in front of a justice of the peace on a charge of causing serious bodily injury.

He was granted the provisional removal of his name and remained in preventive custody until his next appearance on Thursday, September 2.
