The 30-year-old is currently in hospital after he crashed the stolen vehicle at high speed into a police patrol near Feilding.

Foxton police were first alerted to the man’s driving at 5.30 pm When police tried to arrest the man, they did not stop.

Then the man passed a police car and shot an officer from his vehicle. The officer was unhurt.

Armed with a handgun, the man abandoned his vehicle and approached another motorist who forced the person out of his vehicle before leaving the Foxton area.

The Feilding police then attempted to stop the vehicle but were forced to use road spikes after the man once again failed to stop.

After passing over the peaks, the man drove straight towards the patrol car at high speed firing another shot at the police immediately before crashing into the patrol.

No officer was injured in the accident.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand rescued the man from the vehicle before he was taken to Palmerston North Hospital in serious condition.

Inspector Nigel Allan, acting commander of the Central District, says a firearm was found and the man will face “a series of” serious charges.
