He had been deported from Australia.
Security personnel found several sheets tied together hanging from a window in a room on the fourth floor of the Ramada Hotel on Federal Street in Auckland City.
Air Commodore Darryn Webb, chief of managed isolation and quarantine, says the person in the room was found at the front door at approximately 8.24 a.m. this morning while the matter was being investigated.
“He was immediately detained by police and he is currently at the facility under questioning. So far, we have not been able to establish what time the man escaped from the facility,” says Webb.
Police investigations are underway, including a CCTV review to find out the man’s movements while he was off the premises.
“Facility security has been reviewed and immediate improvements have been made after this incident,” says Webb.
He says the health risk of Covid-19 has been assessed as low.
“The police investigation is at an early stage, and initial indications are that this person escaped by exiting through a fourth floor window and climbing a makeshift rope, which is clearly an extremely dangerous act.
“This person has put himself and others at potential risk and his actions were unacceptable. Willingly leaving our facility will not be tolerated and appropriate action will be taken.”
Webb says the man arrived from Australia on a deportation flight on Sept. 16 and tested negative on day three and day 12. He is on day 12 of his stay.
The man has been asymptomatic throughout his stay.
