Man dies after crashing into tree in North Canterbury

One person died and one of the main highways north of Canterbury was closed for a time after a morning accident.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokeswoman Lyn Crosson said early reports suggested a car had hit a tree, trapping a person and blocking the road.

Crews from Amberley, Waipara and Scargill were dispatched to the scene and the person is believed to have sustained serious injuries, he said.

A police spokeswoman later confirmed that the person had died in the accident.

Things understands that a man from the Omihi area was killed in the accident.

San Juan was also sent to the place.

A spokesperson for the Christchurch Transportation Operations Centers said the accident had closed the road to traffic between Scargill Valley Rd and SH7. The detours were in place for a time before reopening again shortly before 11 a.m.

The fatal accident occurs just over two weeks after another on the same stretch of road.

There have been at least 12 other crashes within a 900-meter stretch of Omihi Rd, just north of Burrow Rd, since January 2000, according to crash data from the New Zealand Transportation Agency. Of them, one was serious, four were minor and the rest were not injuries.

There have been at least 27 deaths on Canterbury’s roads so far this year, 17 fewer than at the same time last year. Nationwide, 276 people have died on the roads so far this year, 20 fewer than at the same time last year.
