A man has been charged in connection with an assault on two police officers at the Rotorua police station.

Two members of the police staff were taken to hospital following an incident at the Rotorua Police Station custody center on October 22, leaving one officer unconscious.

Staff were evaluated at the hospital and released the next day to recover at home, Bay of Plenty District Commander said, Superintendent Andy McGregor said.

“One of them took time off and went back to work and the other officer is still not working.

“We continue to support our officers in these special circumstances.”

A 31-year-old man appeared in Rotorua District Court on October 23 charged with injuring with intent to injure and resisting police.

“The police work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and acts of violence like this against our officers are unacceptable.

“The police take the safety of their personnel seriously, so we are working closely with the officers involved in this attack and will continue to do so as more investigations are conducted into this incident.”
