A 31-year-old man has been charged with assault following the death of 10-month-old Poseidyn Hemopo-Pickering in Auckland.

He will appear in Manukau District Court on Monday.

Poseidyn, who lived in a house on William Ave, Manurewa, suffered head injuries and died at Starship Children’s Hospital on September 6.

A homicide investigation was subsequently launched.

Detective Sergeant Major Kevin Tiernan said the homicide investigation is ongoing and there are more charges pending.

Previously, he said that Poseidyn’s death was the result of intentionally inflicted head injuries. She appealed to those with information about what happened to speak to the police.

The William Ave property has been forensically examined by the police. Other whānau live on a neighboring property.

Poseidyn is the third boy aged 14 and under to die under suspicious circumstances in South Auckland this year, and the sixth nationally.

On average, nine children die in suspicious or homicidal circumstances in New Zealand each year, according to The Homicide Report, a Stuff data research.
