A man was stabbed with a machete during a random aggravated robbery in Wellington by a group believed to be associated with the Nomads gang.

Detective Sergeant Steve Wescott said The incident was the twelfth “standover” theft believed to be linked to the same larger group, the Nomads Bad Company chapter, since March last year.

The man and a woman were sitting in a vehicle at Stellin Memorial Park in the Northland suburb of Wellington on Saturday, around 6 p.m., when he approached them.

Two cars full of people surrounded the vehicle and allegedly beat the man, threatened him with a knife, and stole his backpack.

When he tried to retrieve his backpack, his leg was cut off with a machete, causing a large cut, police said.

A property linked to nomads on Dorset Way in Wilton was later raided by police, seizing a vehicle, a backpack and a machete.

A 20-year-old man was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery. He remains in custody and is expected to reappear in Wellington District Court on January 28.

Wescott said more arrests were likely.

Police are looking for sightings of a white BMW and a silver Nissan sedan, seen in the park area around the time of the incident.

The injured man was treated at Wellington Hospital and was in stable condition, a spokeswoman for the Capital and Coast District Board of Health said.

In December, Stuff revealed that there had been 10 similar standover-type incidents in Wellington, involving members of the Nomads gang.

One involved a man who was hit in the head with a metal object and had his money stolen in the city center, after trying to buy cannabis using Discord, a group chat app used primarily in the gaming community. .

No one has been charged for the incident.

The police believe that similar incidents are not reported, as the victims may have been trying to buy drugs.

In November, neighbors of a home on Wilton Rd with ties to nomads raised concerns with Stuff and Kāinga Ora on the growing presence of gangs on the street.

One resident said there have been at least seven or eight police raids on the same home in the past six months, and at least 20 police visits.

In October, two people believed to be linked to the nomads were arrested after a group, allegedly armed with knives and a firearm, broke into their home on Hamilton Rd, made threats and stole drugs, cash and other properties.

In August, a man was dragged from a car parked on Shelley Bay Rd, overlooking the boardwalk, kidnapped and assaulted.

The random incident happened to a couple in late August.

The alleged offenders, two men, demanded cash and electronic devices, and to know where he lived.

The victim was able to escape unscathed but was “extremely traumatized” by the incident, Wescott said.
