The man’s condition, which was originally critical, has stabilized and is no longer life-threatening, police said.

On November 13 (local time) he was deemed fit to be arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police are working with medical and legal teams to determine when the man can be interviewed.

In September, the man suspected of shooting Ratana was identified as Louis de Zoysa.

A childhood friend of Zoysa’s told the UK’s Daily Telegraph that the 23-year-old had been a “troubled child”, and police were a regular visitor to his family’s home.

A funeral was held for Ratana, who was originally from Hawke’s Bay, earlier this month.

Mourners paid tribute to Ratana as a “great man with an even bigger heart.”

His partner, Su Bushby, said he had “touched so many people’s lives” and that we will truly miss him.

“My life has been richer and more fun to meet you and I feel blessed that you were in my life,” she said during the service.

“They took you too soon, your gym, rugby and the police will help keep your legacy, your kindness and your spirit alive,” he said at the time.

Ratana served in the London Metropolitan Police for nearly three decades and moved to the UK in 1989.
