A man was arrested after a police officer was attacked in East Auckland.
Police said a driver took off after the officer tried to stop a car on Ormiston Road in Flat Bush just after noon yesterday and then reversed the officer’s car when traffic stopped him.
They both got out of their vehicles and the offender immediately began hitting the officer on the head.
Police said members of the public intervened, holding the attacker and calling 111, until other officers arrived.
The officer had a broken finger and bruises, but no serious head injuries.
A 25-year-old man was charged today with assault with intent to injure, recklessly operating a motor vehicle and failing to stop when necessary, and is due to appear in Manukau District Court tomorrow.
Police said it was “completely unacceptable” for anyone to assault a police officer and thanked members of the public who intervened.
