A man was arrested after a body was discovered in a burning vehicle in south Auckland, prompting a homicide investigation.
Manukau County Police Detective Inspector Chris Barry said the body was discovered in the vehicle on Alfriston Rd in semi-rural Alfriston Wednesday morning.
Barry said emergency services were called to the scene around 3 a.m. for a report that a vehicle was on fire.
Firefighters put out the fire and discovered a body inside. An examination of the scene is in progress.
Barry said police arrested a man in connection with the incident and that he was charged with arson.
The police are conducting investigations to identify the dead person and find out what happened.
Auckland detectives are working on the case.
Police are requesting sightings of a white 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander, the car that was on fire.
They want to hear from anyone who has seen suspicious activity related to the vehicle.
Barry said: “We believe this is an isolated incident.”
However, he refused to specify the relationship between the detainee and the victim.
“At this time, out of respect for the family, we cannot enter any information about the deceased,” he said.
Police arrested the man “at the beginning” of the investigation and did not say where he was arrested.
Police do not believe the car was stolen and there was no indication that there was any link to organized crime or gangs.
Barry thanked the person who alerted emergency services to the car fire.
He said police would reopen roads in the area as soon as possible.
He was reluctant to be elaborate on any details as the matter was before the courts.
The charred remains of the car lie at an angle just off the road, across from the Anglican Parish of Clevedon.
The car was a charred shell, not even the license plates visible.
