Police arrested a man after an officer was allegedly shot during a chase in Northland.

The 24-year-old was found on a property in Whangārei and detained without incident Tuesday night, police said in a statement.

He is due to appear in Whangārei District Court on Wednesday to face various charges, including firearms offenses related to the incident.

Northland District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said police hoped the arrest would bring some reassurance to the Whangārei community.

“We would like to thank you for your support in our investigation today.

“The police have carried out numerous lines of investigation into this incident today and at this stage we are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter.”

Whangārei officers carried weapons after the shooting as a temporary measure, but this general arming was no longer in place, Hill said.

COP SHAKED AFTER ALLEGED TRIP

The police officer was “shocked” after his police vehicle was allegedly shot during a morning chase in Northland.

Several shots were fired at the patrol car during the chase in Whangārei, the second time that Northland police had been shot in three weeks.

Police were conducting a checkpoint at Te Hononga St, Otangarei, when the incident unfolded, Hill said.

A vehicle with two occupants stopped at the checkpoint at 2.13 am Tuesday, but the driver left before police could speak to him, Hill said.

A chase began after the vehicle failed to stop when followed.

Hill said the driver fired into the air “shortly after,” then stopped and fired multiple shots at police from his vehicle.

None of the shots hit the patrol vehicle and the officer inside was not injured.

Hill said Things the officer was “obviously shocked” after the incident, but said he was confident that with the support they would “respond positively.”
