A man who was shot by police after shooting a police dog in Northland is expected to survive, according to Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith.

The dog was shot in the head after police confronted a gunman in Tangowahine, a small town about 12 kilometers northeast of Dargaville, police confirmed.

The man who shot the dog was shot by officers, police said.

Smith told 1 NEWS that police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

“It is an absolutely terrible tragedy. The important thing is that no other people are sought. No one else is involved. Everyone must have security and the police must continue their work,” he said.

Smith said both the man and the police dog are in critical condition, but “both are expected to recover” by mid-afternoon.

Both the man and the dog were taken to Dargaville hospital in critical condition before being flown to Auckland in separate helicopters, a St John spokesman told 1 NEWS.

Police were called around 9.17am after a “suspicious person” was reported on Tangowahine Valley Road.

A rescue helicopter was seen arriving at the Veterinary Specialists Group’s emergency treatment center in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert, with the car of a police dog handler parked outside the facility.
