The winning photo in the ‘Most Beautiful View in New Zealand’ contest, taken by Darren Patterson, is of Aoraki / Mt Cook from Lake Hooker.

The stunning views of the Mackenzie region have caught the judges’ attention with Christchurch photographer Darren Patterson’s Aoraki / Mt Cook landscape, first in a competition to find the most beautiful view in New Zealand.

Two other photos taken in the Mackenzie feature in the top 10 of the competition, with a photo of Lake Poaka in fourth place and a photo of Aoraki / Mt Cook in sixth place.

The competition, organized by the Macular Degeneration New Zealand charity ahead of Macular Degeneration Awareness Week, November 2-9, received more than 500 nominations, with entries pre-selected by a panel of judges.

Winning photographer Patterson said it was “amazing” to hear that he had won the competition.

“It’s really cool to be recognized that you can take a decent photo that people like,” he said.

Patterson said he had wanted to take a photo at Aoraki / Mt Cook and Hooker Glacier in the winter for quite some time, and found the perfect opportunity during a road trip around the South Island.

On the day the photo was taken, the lake was almost completely frozen over and a few days later photos appeared showing about 30 people walking across the lake.

Said Aoraki / Mt Cook was “awesome”.

“[It’s] It’s hard not to take a good photo to be honest. With the mountains and the water, it has that wild nature feeling. “

Your winning photo is a combination of several different photos you took with a tripod, using multiple exposures to focus on the front, middle, and background so that every part of the photo looks sharp.

Fourth place in the competition went to Charlene Koen, with this image of Lake Poaka on the Mackenzie.

Patterson’s advice for taking quality landscapes in New Zealand is to bring a tripod and take the time to make sure everything is in focus.

“If the light isn’t right, you can fix that in Photoshop, but you can’t fix a photo that is not in focus. He’s just dead, ”he said.

One of Patterson’s other photos, of her children at Rotoita Lake, was 10th in the competition.

The 10 most beautiful sights of New Zealand in the competition were:

  1. Hooker Lake, Mount Cook National Park, Canterbury
  2. Pouakai Tarns, Mount Egmont National Park, Taranaki
  3. Riwaka Revival, Azul National Park, Nelson
  4. Lake Poaka, Mackenzie Basin, Canterbury
  5. New Brighton Pier, Christchurch, Canterbury
  6. Aoraki / Mt Cook, Canterbury
  7. Huka Falls, Taupo, Waikato
  8. Mount Kakaramea / Rainbow Mountain, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty
  9. Milford Sound, Southland
  10. Lake Rotoiti, by St Arnaud on the South Island

The contest was organized by the charity “as a poignant reminder of what people with macular degeneration can lose” and to raise awareness of the importance of managing eye health.
