A punter jumped over the fence and entered the track mid-race, causing jockeys to swerve their horses around him on Wellington Cup day.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that the man was arrested and charged with criminal nuisance, for carrying out an act that endangers public safety and is due to appear in Lower Hutt District Court on Thursday. Nobody was hurt in the incident.
A woman at the event, who did not want to be named, said the man jumped the hurdle about 150 meters from the finish line Saturday afternoon in the eighth race at Trentham.
“The guy was stupid. All the horses had to spread out around him. It’s more about the safety of the horses and riders, ”he said. “Everybody was yelling at him.”

After jumping the fence, police took the man away, he said.
“There was a bit of protest from the crowd when they took him away.”
Racing announcer Aidan Rodley tweeted the sirens that sounded after the eighth race after a member of the crowd ran onto the track and stopped, as the field raced around them.
Incredible scenes. The idiot is lucky to be alive. “
The stipend administrators’ report on the incident said a request for a decision was filed with the Judiciary Committee on whether the chances of the Boston Strong Boy horse, ridden by Johnathan Parkes, had been affected. The Judiciary Committee ruled that Boston Strong Boy would be declared a non-runner and that all bets on that runner will be refunded.
Organizers of the Wellington Cup have been contacted for comment.
