Two people driving the police in a chase in South Auckland overnight have seriously injured a dog handler and themselves after crashing.
The incident took place at the junction of John Walker Rd and Weymouth Rd, Manurewa.
The three wounded were rushed to Middlemore Hospital around 11 p.m.
The dog trainer was on his way to chase when the fleeing vehicle lost control by turning a corner at high speed and boning the police car.
The two vehicles suffered severe damage and the debris was scattered in all directions from the scene, the photographs showed.
The dog cart stopped near the road near some trees, and the fleeing vehicle, a Ford Falcon XR6, stopped in front of the wrong side of the road.
“If these people were complying with the conditions of the coronavirus blockade, this would not have happened,” said Inspector Daniel Meade.
“We had an incident in which a vehicle did not stop when a police unit indicated it. We lost sight of that vehicle due to the speed at which it was traveling.”
“He was unable to take a corner at the junction of the John Walker and Weymouth highways and collided with another vehicle that was not part of the chase.”
The suspect vehicle was not stopped for police on Gainsborough St, Manurewa, and the chase began.
The dog handler suffered a broken leg and the police dog was fine, Meade said. All of the injured people were seriously injured but not life threatening.
St John sent five vehicles to the scene of the accident and transported the three injured to Middlemore Hospital.
Two of the three were in critical condition and the other was serious, St John reported.
The Serious Accident Unit had attended the scene and the Independent Police Conduct Authority would be alerted to the incident.
