People have been caught making the most of Napier’s flooded streets as heavy rains hit the region.

One person went wakeboarding in the soggy grass on the side of a road, dragged by a car.

However, the adventure did not end well, as they abandoned their board and fell along a patch of grass that was still above the water.

Another young man took the opportunity to test his kayaking skills in the middle of a flooded street.

The person capturing the video yells, “Say hello to the camera, bro” as the kayaker advances.

The Napier City Council is asking residents to flush toilets only when necessary and limit all water use as flash floods overwhelm the sewage system.

Police say they have received 16 reports of flooding as of 5.45pm and have received one report of a person trapped in their home.

Reports of surface flooding are found in areas such as State Highway 51, Gloucester St, Avondale Rd, Willowbank Rd, Meeanee Rd, and Taradale Rd.

MetService recorded 74mm of rain at Napier today, with more rain expected tonight.

It has a heavy rain watch for Hawke’s Bay until 1 a.m. tomorrow.

MetService is also forecasting thunderstorms for the region.

A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ says emergency services are dealing with multiple calls, mainly in Napier CBD with shops and offices flooding the water.

Hastings has called in two additional trucks to help.
