12:48 am – US President Donald Trump has stated that he will “easily win” the election if only “legal votes” are counted.
“Many votes were late. I have already won decisively,” he said, in his first public appearance since he falsely claimed victory on election night.
He said “big media” and “big technology” had been against him, but he “won” anyway.
Mail-in votes that arrive after Election Day are generally counted, provided they were posted on or before Election Day. Many have favored Biden, and apparently Democrats are more likely to vote and avoid queues amid the pandemic than Republicans.
Trump has yet to win, and most experts choose Biden to pull the election.
He went on to say that “fake polls” were used to dissuade his supporters from voting.
“Now there are only a few states left to decide … the voting apparatus in those states is run by the Democrats,” he said, saying their vote is “being secretly reduced.” There is no evidence for this.
He called voting by mail a “corrupt system,” though no widespread evidence of voter fraud by mail has ever been found, and that Democrats were stealing the elections, also without evidence.
“The president is lying right now. Over and over again,” CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta tweeted.
“This is like the ‘downfall’ scene at Xanax,” former George W Bush speechwriter David Frum tweeted, referring to the famous parodied movie scene in which Hitler realizes that the war she’s lost.
Some US networks, including MSNBC, withdrew from the speech early when the president began making false and unverified claims.
“Here we are again in the unusual position of not only interrupting the president of the United States, but correcting the president of the United States,” said the presenter.
“I have read or seen all of Trump’s speeches since 2016. This is the most dishonest speech he has ever made,” CNN fact checker Daniel Dale tweeted.
CNN also noted that if the Democrats wanted to “steal” the election, it is strange that they did not also rob the Senate, which remains under Republican control.
Despite the counting days, Trump said he would still win “easily.”
“There will be a lot of litigation … it will end up perhaps in the highest court in the country.”
